Can You Spell Poverty?

Quayle may not be able to do it

I almost missed an item in our paper. Fortunately, my husband (Mr. Fogey) pointed it out. It seems that former Vice-President Dan Quayle may not able to spell poverty any more than potato–or at least, he doesn’t want to think about the word.

When attending a concert by John Mellencamp, Quayle walked out when the singer led into the song "Walk Tall" by declaring, "This one is for all the poor people who’ve been ignored by the current administration."

How gauche! Mentioning poverty in the presence of a politician! Doesn’t Mellencamp know that poverty should only be discussed in anti-poverty gatherings? Too much light on the subject might make Americans uncomfortable with our culture of consumption and competition. Then, how would politicians be able to sell tax cuts that only benefit the few?
