Morning News Roundup (07 Feb)

  • Fallout continues over the Danish cartoons, with Afghanis attacking peacekeepers (BBC) and 5,000 followers of Muqtada al-Sadr burning Danish flags outside of Kut (Seattle P-I). Boycotts are beginning throughout the Middle East, taking delicious havarti off the shelves (BBC). Meanwhile, Scott McClellan says the US condemns the violence that's erupted around these cartoons (WaPo).

  • A bomb explodes in a crowded Baghdad market, killing at least 7 people (BBC). A roadside bomb (IED) kills four marines (NYTimes).

  • New House Majority Leader John Boehner (pronounced "bayner," not... you know) doesn't support efforts to ban lobbyist-funded travel for members of Congress, which most likely will translate to a sham of a lobbyist reform bill--aka, a boner (WaPo).

  • RawStory reports that the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy is working great in Iraq, discharging (or making the decision to leave easier) valuable soldiers--who happen to be gay--who want to serve their country.

  • The warrantless wiretapping (aka, "terrorist surveillance") program isn't a partisan issue--check out this great exchange (via ThinkProgress) between Arlen Specter and Alberto "VO5" Gonzales during the latter's testimony to the Judical committee yesterday.

  • Over 90 million viewers tuned in to the Super Bowl (HuffPo/Hollywood Reporter) to watch the refs steal the game and annoint running back Jerome Bettis king of all back-ups (see this great Slate commentary about the game). Am I bitter? Indeed. Well, at least until the next Chelsea game...
