This Might Ruin the Eiffel Tower for Me
Alright, I'm going to admit something to the world that is buried deep within me: I've been a closet Tom Cruise fan throughout his career, ever since Risky Business (which, after seeing, I requested a herringbone jacket for Christmas; if you haven't seen this 80s classic in awhile, give it another chance--it stands up quite well). I haven't felt proud about this, and I've been thrown into despair on many occasions by this fact. (Mainly due to taunting from Mrs. F.) But there's just something about his smile, the way he runs in almost every movie he's in...

I've been quite excited about the coming War of the Worlds collaboration with Steven Spielberg (it looks like a welcome return to Jurassic Park B-movie action and special effects after last year's disappointingly syrupy and dull Terminal). But I've been a little vexed by Tom's recent over-the-top proclamations of love for his new girlfriend, Katie Holmes (as well as his ramping up of testifying for his scientology faith and his attacks on the psychology community). But I just tried to put blinders on and focus on WOTW. But now comes this bit of news that might break my fandom completely; via the BBC:

Hollywood star Tom Cruise has become engaged to his girlfriend Katie Holmes at the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

"Today is a magnificent day for me, I'm engaged to a magnificent woman," he told reporters on Friday.

Dawson's Creek star Holmes, 26, was wearing a large diamond ring as she accompanied Cruise, who was promoting his film War of the Worlds in France.

Cruise, 42, was previously married to actresses Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, from whom he separated in 2001.

Cruise said on Friday: "Yes, I proposed to her. It was early this morning at the Eiffel Tower, so I haven't slept at all."

Asked why he chose the famed Paris landmark, he replied: "I've never been to the Eiffel Tower. It's Paris, it's a beautiful city, it's very romantic."

I don't know that I'll ever be able to look at the Eiffel Tower the same again.
