A Late Musical Tribute to 9/11

iMixBack at Christmas 2001, my Manhattanite pals Ward (of Sutton Impact fame) and Sue made a wonderful CD compilation of NYC-related tunes called "We Love NY More Than Ever." They'd lived through the horror of that day and were lifted by the strength of community in the days after, and the CD celebrated . Yesterday, in observance of the 9/11 anniversary, I popped it on and it's as wonderful now as it was that Christmas. I tried to upload it to the iTunes store as an iMix yesterday, but it didn't show up until today (what with all the technical rejiggering that was going one; see post below). But hey, at least I was more timely than Dennis Hastert.

Anyhoo, I wasn't able to get all the tunes from the list below into the iMix (such as "Manhattan" by the New York Pops Orchestra), but it's pretty complete (I also added the DNA remix of "Tom's Diner"). Here's the original mix's lineup, with notes on what's not available in the iMix.
  1. Hard Times in New York Town -- Bob Dylan
  2. Manhattan -- Blossom Dearie
  3. A Heart in New York -- Simon & Garfunkel
  4. Autumn in New York -- Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong
  5. New York Telepone Conversation -- Lou Reed (not available)
  6. New York State of Mind -- Billy Joel
  7. Fairytale of New York -- The Pogues
  8. Chelsea Hotel No. 2 -- Leonard Cohen
  9. Central Park West -- John Coltrane
  10. 52nd Street -- Billy Joel
  11. Sunday in New York -- Bobby Darin
  12. I Guess The Lord Must Be in New York City -- Harry Nilsson
  13. The Only Living Boy in New York -- Simon & Garfunkel
  14. Halloween Parade -- Lou Reed
  15. Englishman in New York -- Sting
  16. Tom's Diner -- Suzanne Vega
  17. Manhattan -- The New York Pops (not available)
  18. Theme from New York, New York -- Frank Sinatra (not available)
  19. Cold Again -- Freedy Johnston
  20. Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side -- Magnetic Fields
  21. New York, New York -- Ryan Adams
If you're interested (and have the iTunes software), check it out -- it's nicely eclectic, and it ends on a high note with that Ryan Adams tune. Thanks a tonne, Sue and Ward.

(Speaking of iTunes, I'm loving the new Cover Flip feature in the just-released version 7 software, which emulates flipping through a box of LPs and finding your fave album by sight.)
