Recent Huggs
I'm trying to upload one or two stories a day over at Hugg.com (see previous post about what this is), and here are my two recent stories... both, funnily enough, about organic milk.
Spilling the Milk
There's a battle going on over organic milk, and it's being played out not just in the media but in local Seattle groceries like PCC and Madison Market. The larger battle is being fought via a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture alleging that Horizon Organic Dairy, the nation's largest organic dairy brand, is violating federal organic standards. The press release from the filing Cornucopia Institute also revealed that Seattle's PCC would soon stop selling Horizon products. [Hugg | Seattle Weekly story]
Organic Opportunities
American Public Media's Marketplace radio news program reports on the boom of organic farming in Vermont and New Hampshire, fueled by the strong growth of consumer demand. Organic dairy product sales have doubled in the past four years, which has left the Stonyfield Farm dairy company (the world's largest organic yogurt producer) scrambling to source more organic milk. But it's also been a boon to the small organic farmers. [Hugg | Marketplace story, which includes text and link to audio]
And with that, my blogging will commence until tomorrow, when I'll be hooked up to the wi-fi in my Mom's condo in Hawaii (I know... tough life).
Cheers to ya'll, and thanks as always for visiting -- Old Fogey and I certainly appreciate it.
