Of Jesus and Millionaires

The continuing culture of greed

This week my husband and I were down at our beach place in Carteret County, not exactly a center of NC liberalism, or prosperity for that matter. In a parking lot, I noticed a bumper sticker saying, "I like millionaires."

It startled me (although perhaps I remain easily startled as I refuse to abandon hope in the American people) for its sheer stupidity. I’m an advocate for the poor, but I would never consider a bumper sticker saying, "I like poor people." I recognize that all groups of people have both scoundrels and heroes in their midst.

On further reflection, I became more upset by the sticker’s reflection of the culture of greed. I don’t like to label people ‘unchristian’ after being labeled as such because of my support for separation of church and state. However, I can’t believe Jesus would have displayed a "I like millionaires" bumper sticker.

On the other hand, Jesus loved both sinners and saints. His sticker would probably read "I love all people, but I don’t often like millionaires."
